White’s Tree Frogs

As I’ve mentioned before, for a long time I didn’t think I was much of an ‘amphibian person.’ Then I got my first axolotl, Bubbles, after wanting axolotls for awhile but living, for many years, in a state where they were not legal. Bubbles really kicked off my interest in keeping amphibians and in late 2023 I took in a small group of White’s tree frogs from a breeder with the intentions that I was only going to raise them up until they were old enough to tell if they were males or females. And here we are. Yes, I kept some. Who didn’t see that coming?

Chihiro:

Chihiro, Chi for short, (well all my current frogs, really) is supposed to be a snowflake blue eyed honey White’s tree frog. I say is supposed to be, because so far my frogs don’t really have the pretty yellow coloring that some honey morph tree frogs seem to have. Chihiro’s color seems to vary between a very pretty slate/sage green and brown. In some lighting Chihiro does seem to have blue eyes but, in other lighting, her eyes look more like a normal colored White’s tree frog. Either way, of course, Chihiro is beautiful. Like, I’ve come to find, all frogs she loooves her food. However, out of my current 4 tree frogs Chihiro is the most shy. She tends to like hanging out in her spot in the back of the enclosure and really only engages with people when it’s feeding time. I can tell Chihiro apart from my other frogs because she’s one of two females, and has small white spots on her nose in between her nostrils. I can almost always tell Chihiro apart by her personality, as well, since she’s the shiest of the frogs and doesn’t get as excited as the other three do when they see me.

Sen:

Hatch Date: July 2nd, 2023

Sen is Chihiro’s sister. Like Chihiro, she is a snowflake blue eyed honey White’s tree frog. I tell Sen and Chihiro apart because Sen has more snowflakes, including an adorable little spot on the side of her face. Sen has a really cute personality, and is quite vocal for a female frog. She doesn’t call the way that a male frog would, but she very commonly croaks a few times when she sees people near the frog enclosure. She’s just a talkative little lady, I suppose, which is adorable. Sen is more outgoing than her sister Chihiro, and gets quite excited about begging for food when she sees people near the frog enclosure.

Kohaku:

Hatch Date: July 2nd, 2023

When I first decided to keep a few of the White’s tree frogs I had been raising up, I was originally only going to keep females. I prefer the females a bit over the males because they’re quieter, and I’m a really light sleeper! However, what can a say, the boys won me over and I did end up keeping two, light night serenades and all. It took me a long time to name the boys because, for the longest time, I was convinced that I wasn’t going to be keeping any boys. But Kohaku and his brother are here to stay, and live with their sisters Chihiro and Sen. No worries about breeding, frogs need a rain chamber to breed! One of two boys, I can tell Kohaku apart from his siblings because, out of the four of them, Kohaku is the only one who has almost no snowflakes (white spots).

Boh:

Hatch Date: July 2nd, 2023

Boh is the other male I kept! I can easily tell him apart from his brother and sisters because Boh has snowflakes on his back and side, but none on his face like his sister’s have. If you haven’t noticed already, all of my current White’s tree frogs are named after characters from the Japanese movie Spirited Away. It started with Chihiro, and then the other three just kind of needed names to match. The rest, as they say, is history!
