Snails

Call me crazy, but I really like snails. I’ve kept a number of species over the years, and currently keep two.

Garden Snails (Cornu aspersum):

Escargatoire Started: 2023

I loved keeping garden snails as pets when I was a kid! In 2023 I found a person who lived locally to me and was looking for new homes for some of her captive bred garden snails. I couldn’t pass them up! I used to name my garden snails, but haven’t for awhile now. How many I have varies from a few to…many when I allow clutches of eggs to hatch. My land snails are kept in a bioactive enclosure with lots of springtails and dwarf white isopods. I basically use my snail enclosure as a giant springtail culture and use the springtails from their enclosure to seed all my other bioactive setups. An avid snail racer in my childhood, these days my snail antics are lower key. I still enjoy keeping them, though. They look like cute little aliens!

Pink Ramshorn Snails:

Escargatoire Started: 2017

Many years ago now I kept a large freshwater community tank, that, among other critters, pink ramshorn snails called home. Eventually, over the years, my fish died off and I didn’t replace them. I was eventually left with a huge aquarium that housed only snails and shrimp. I kept toying with the idea of rehoming them taking down the aquarium, but I had had them for so many years that it was strangely hard to part with them. Instead I decided to downgrade, for now, to a 5 gallon aquarium for just my snails and shrimp, plus some aquarium plants. Eventually, when we’re able to move to a bigger place again, my plans are to set up a larger aquarium again.
